HOUSTON -- U.S. Texas Governor Greg Abbott warned Friday of another economic shutdown if the fast spread of COVID-19 is not contained.

"The worst is yet to come as we work our way through that massive increase in people testing positive," Abbott told local TV station KLBK.

SANTIAGO -- Chile reported on Friday that the number of cases of the novel coronavirus in the country has reached 309,274, with 6,781 deaths.

According to the Ministry of Health, 3,058 new cases and 99 more deaths from the virus were reported in the last 24 hours.

SINGAPORE -- The ruling People's Action Party (PAP) won 83 of the 93 parliamentary seats in Singapore's general election, Returning Officer Tan Meng Dui said on Saturday.

The PAP won the election with 61.24 percent of votes, compared to 69.86 percent in last election in 2015.

CAIRO -- Egypt registered on Friday 981 new COVID-19 cases, bringing the total infections in the country to 80,235, said the health ministry.

Also on Friday, 85 cases have died from the respiratory disease in Egypt, taking the death toll to 3,702, the ministry's spokesman, Khaled Megahed, said in a statement.
