SANTIAGO, Dec. 2 (Xinhua) -- Chile registered 1,035 new cases of novel coronavirus (COVID-19) infection in the past 24 hours, for a cumulative total of 553,898 cases since the start of the outbreak here, Chilean Minister of Health Enrique Paris said in a statement Wednesday.
Of the new cases, 773 presented symptoms.
In the same 24 hours, eight more patients died from causes associated with COVID-19, raising the death toll to 15,438.
"The positivity for the last week nationwide is 4.1 percent," however the rate is higher in parts of the country, such as the southern Magallanes region, said Paris.
The regions reporting the highest increase in new confirmed cases over the past seven days include Antofagasta, Tarapaca and Coquimbo to the north, and Valparaiso in central Chile.
